The Benefits Of Working From Home

Friday, December 25th, 2009

The unemployment rates in Western countries are going through the roof with companies laying off staff as they struggle to cope with the current financial turmoil. Losing your job or being made redundant is rarely a happy event however when it becomes a reality there is only one way that we should be thinking; in a positive manner. I know that this is easier said than done however feeling sorry for ourselves will not help the situation.

I was made redundant from a financial services corporation when I was aged twenty-two. Due to my age I was not in reality too bothered about the whole situation. I have to admit that I was not particularly enjoying the role that I was in. I had always wanted to be my own boss and this would be the perfect time to turn my dream into a reality. Being made redundant turned out to be a blessing in disguise; I would probably have left the company within a few months in any case but this way they were actually paying me a redundancy package to leave!

I used this money to set up my own small business. I was going to run one-to-one stuttering therapy courses to help people to achieve fluency. I am a person who has managed to successfully overcome a stutter and I therefore felt that I had something to offer.

Working from home has many benefits as I have found to my own benefit. These include being your own boss and therefore not having to answer to other people. Choosing your own hours, choosing the amount of hours you work and the amount of holidays that you have. The rigid structure of set hours or working shifts no longer have to be an issue. The time spent travelling to work, normally in a rush hour period, is basically time that could be better spent. I am a person who prefers to work late at night and at times early in the morning when the world is seemingly at its quitest.

Working from home now allows me to go to all of the important events in my children’s lives. For example attending their school sports days, the christmas play, parents evenings, the visits to the dentists. People who are “employed” have to miss a number of these events due to a lack of holiday time or a lack of flexibility at their work.

I now have partnerships in other business ventures including one offering affordable external doors and one offering DVD authoring.

Setting up my own home based business has been the best thing that I have ever done and I would recommend other people to do the same.

Business Mastermind Groups - The Power To Grow Firms

Friday, December 25th, 2009

Anybody with an entrepreneur’s character loves to talk with other similar entrepreneurs.  A business master-mind meeting gives you the chance to develop close, supportive relationships with a small number of business people and entrepreneurs who want to help you, as well as be given your support.

Each person in the group gets the opportunity to solicit help from the Mastermind.  In this way, you help your fellow group members and they help you in return.  Let’s explore what makes a good Business Mastermind.

Just before examining some of the definite elements of real Mastermind meetings, let’s speak to what they are not.  Countless Internet marketers are selling clubs called Elite mastermind groups, or similar.  The arrangement is for you to turn up for a teleseminar for sixty to ninety minutes in order for them to teach their ideas and methods to you.  Calls like this are not based upon the principles of the original Napoleon Hill “Think & Grow Rich” model of coming-together of members who are peers, working together to assist all people accomplish better targets.  The “big names” who have become too big to consult for solo business owners, with people like Chris Cardell, who has built a business from sales of advice as well as CDs and MP3s of phone meetings.

First, a good mastermind group is made up of compatible individuals who “fit” together.  There should be nobody in the meeting who doesn’t wisely belong.  The make-up of the group is ideally based on a set of criteria that members determine.  For example, business size or a particular industry might be the criteria for a group.  Alternatively, maybe every member is a performer or in financial services, etc.

Second, the group needs a clear goal.  A good illustration might be to help each member to enjoy a money-making and increasing business.  Or it may be to help each member to increase twofold their business each year.

Third, your group will have to write down rules.  These should deal with subjects such as presence, input, accountability, having only one topic of conversation at the meeting, providing encouragement for other members, etc.  Without rules, you will find that some members will be simply too liberal with their behaviour, turning up only when it suits them, or not get involvedwhen the conversation moves on from their issue.

Fourth, answerability is key.  Nobody like the prospect of public shame, and that’s exactly what reporting back to the mastermind meeting will be, if you fail to complete on your actions.  The value of public accountability shouldn’t be disregarded - if you have to make excuses to a single person, that’s awkward.  To report back to a meeting of trusted colleagues that you have “been too busy”, or “forgot”, will rapidly make you so mortified that you would rather simply get the work done.

Fifth, openness.  If group members are not honest and share what they know with you, it will be a pretty empty experience.  It’s the same in reverse, too: you must share what you know with the mastermind group.

By creating a mastermind meeting that follows these concepts, you’ve got a big probability of being in a meeting that will challenge and stretch you.  That means your firm will expand faster and your own capabilities will expand, too.

Is this Work from Home Business Really for You?

Thursday, December 17th, 2009

In the current economic climate and uncertain employment security around the world many people are looking to home businesses as a means of self employment and a potential means of future security.
Just like all business ideas a home business has its challenges to overcome, challenges such as competitors to beat, finding customers, business expenses and more. There are also less obvious problems which tend not to get considered until they arise.
Two of these really should be considered in advance so let’s take a look at them now in the hope you’ll think about them before you leap into the great home business idea you’ve just had.
The particular challenges I’m thinking of are the ones of maintaining your motivation and the one where you fit the business into the family routine. These are not small issues! They need to be considered before you get started on the other challenges.
Staying motivated when working alone at home is tougher than you might think. Most of us are social animals more suited to working in team environments, we tend to work best that way and just having a teammate to work with can spur us to great things. The lack of human contact can be tough until you adjust to it, some never do and can find they long to get back to employment. Another problem arise with good weather!, yes when it’s sunny outside and the beach is looking good it’s hard not to waste time.
trying to fit a home business into family life is also challenging, particularly if you have young children at home. They don’t understand that you need to be left to get on with the business, they just see you there and available to play with. Similarly if your partner needs help with household chores they are going to find it difficult to not ask you to help. You can ease this situation a little if you have a separate office rather than a corner of the lounge room but you’ll still have plenty of distraction.
So before you go looking at your opportunity from a purely financial perspective, have a think about these issues. Are you really the work at home type and how will your family cope with your new business interest, you’ll be more prepared for it when those issues arise.

Small Business How-To: Increasing Your Cash Flow

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

Every small business knows that you live and die by cash flow; a business isn’t likely to survive with a continual shortage of it. Therefore, knowing how to increase your cash flow can guarantee you have the cash you need to cover costs and grow your business.  While not all of these will work perfectly for every business, these suggestions can help your small business stay cash flow positive.

• Your clients or customers should be funding work, not you.  Depending on the type of work or project to be completed, consider requiring partial payment when making sales.

• Make sure your accounts receivables is operating as efficiently as possible as a way to increase cash flow.  Consider allowing your customers to pay via credit card, check or even online and always bill on time.

• Work a deal with your bank about getting a business line of credit opened in case of an emergency or to help you cover a decrease in cash flow for short periods of time.

• Don’t offer a 30 or 60 day window for payment to be made after work is completed, your terms should be payment to be made in full upon completion of the work – no exceptions!

• Encourage customers to pay earlier rather than later by offering incentives or discounts for doing so.

• Do not complete additional work for or send new product to customers late on payments.  Notify them that you will be temporarily suspending work until their balance is paid in full.

• Purchase inventory and office supplies only when necessary and avoid buying in bulk; you may think you’re saving money but actually you’re just tying up cash.

• Hold off on major business purchases whether it’s an Avaya IP office or a new computer until a higher cash flow period (e.g. after a customer pays in full).

This recovery is killing small business

Thursday, December 10th, 2009

I happen to be CEO of a small import export business, in the construction supply industry.

My business is down almost 45 % year to year. Several of my largest credit worthy customers have filed Chapter 11. My bad debt is growing, and the phones barely ring during the height of the construction season.

I have been forced to lay off 5 workers, and reduce the hours of my other 10 employees.

The economy has put our survival in jeopardy.

If this is economic stimulation I must be missing something. With state and federal taxes increasing in a dozen direct and indirect ways, I feel squeezed,

People have become mean spirited and very antagonistic.

Every day I speak to customers and suppliers  around the country, Almost every one of them tells me that they are laying people off, cutting back hours, and cutting expenses at every turn.

Small business is struggling to survive.

Despite the Stock Markets being 40 % above their March lows, I don't believe this recovery is real. This economy is still dropping, The glimmers of rebound that “they” keep telling us about, represent the optimism born of Spring and warm weather.

The Federal Stimulus spending bill has made a bad situation worse because:

1. The Fed and the politicians have misled us into thinking government spending is making a difference.

The psychology of disbelief has pushed the Markets up over 40%. The public sees this performance, and accepts that things must be getting better. They are tempted to put money back into stocks. They chase the market after the bounce has almost run its course, in a vain attempt to recoup their losses and replenish their retirement savings.

Chasing a running market bouncing off a deep dive is a futile strategy destined to fail.We are not at the beginning of the next boom, and the bottom of our depression has not been seen yet.

2. The stimulus money delays a real recovery by keeping bad businesses afloat. Instead of letting the incompetents die off they are keeping alive dead wood for political agenda.

The expression," when a door closes a new window opens" should have been applied to the Auto and banking industries.

What should have been a 2-3 year shakeout and restructuring in a free market is destined to become a prolonged 10 year, slow recovery,(If it ever recovers from all of the interventions)

3 Basic laws of economics have been ignored. When a business fails due to a faulty business plan, the stock holders, the unions, and the bond holders must share the pain.

In the case of the auto bailouts and subsequent bankruptcy, the labor unions have come out as the big winners, while the bond holders have been left holding a bag of pain. Rewarding the unions as political allies at the expense of the rule of law and free enterprise , sends a very stilted message of  distrust and legal disregard.

Politicians should not decide the outcome of free market movements for partisan reasons.

4 The current upward trend in stock prices is ultimately a fools gold fake out. The recession is a depression, and we appear to be doing everything possible to duplicate the errors of our predecessors in the early 1930’s.

Those who do not study history are doomed to repeat it.

The bubble era in economics has ended,. We have lost the drive which made our economy flourish. The banking system has been bailed out and regulated but not fixed.

The final bubble, which the government is attempting to inflate, to pull us out of this disaster is the US Treasury.

When this bubble pops from too much hot air too fast, who will bail out the treasury?
