SmallBiz:PC Tools Internet Security Inside This Version

Friday, September 11th, 2009

In spite of its older brother Spyware Doctor’s fame, PC Tools Internet Security is an interesting offering. The reality is that it is a rarely sought after offering. This is surprising. PC Tools Internet Security Software is built with the same foundational technology as that which gives us Spyware Doctor and PC Tools Antivirus! Additionally, this offering has spamprotection in the offering as well.

I began to wonder if it might be price that is keeping it from wide spread adoption. After checking on pricing, $59.95 (as of 9/26/08) is a reasonable price. The only bad thing I found in reviews was its lack of heuristic scanning.

Heuristic scanning: “A heuristic scan is used to catch new, unknown viruses in your systems that have not yet been identified. Only some antiviruses can do this type of scan, the majority are only able to catch known viruses.” This doesn’t seem to be the reason either.

I will chalk it up to a lack of marketing. The reason I say this is because I see heuristic search capability incorporated in the latest release. Most importantly, I found out that most customers and potential customers are still looking for their antivirus and firewall as separate products.

Bob Metcalfe, the person attributed as the Inventor of the Internet exemplifies what choosing what is not so popular….”And I turned around to look at these 10, 12 AT&T suits, and they were all laughing. And it was in that moment that AT&T became my bte noire, because I realized in that moment that these SOBs were rooting against me. To this day, I still cringe at the mention of AT&T. That’s why my cell phone is a T-Mobile. The rest of my family uses AT&T, but I refuse .”

Granted, choosing PC Tools Internet Security will not be that dramatic but it could prove to be a good internet security application for your computer.

The Difficulty of Operating a Small Business by yourself

Tuesday, August 4th, 2009

A quarter of a century ago, opening a retail store was much easier. Consumers were regularly buying staple items they needed. Businesses were easy to run and business was good. Store owners often saw themselves as prime examples of individuals living the American dream. The neighborhood kids knew if they ever needed a job, it could be found at one of the different neighborhood establishments: candy store, drug store or local shoe shop business. Some of the shops have been owned by the same family for generations. However, in the current economy most of these mom and pop enterprises are being forced to close their doors. They’re struggling to just keep their businesses afloat.

Over the years, most of these local businesses had survived competition from large department store chains. They were able to compete because they offered individual customer service. They were able to maintain a steady flow of loyal customers. The neighborhood shoe store, for example, would allow a customer to return a pair of shoes without a receipt, a gesture based on personal acquaintance with the customer and had faith that they would be back in the future. Sometimes developing strong good customer service bonds were better for business than just offering a 10% off coupon. The ability to offer this type of personal customer service is one of the main tactics small retail outlets were able to use to gain the advantage over large department stores.

Since the development of the internet, small retail stores have had to compete not only with their local competitors, but they now have to compete with online stores. The impact from online stores may not have been clear at first, but gradually increasing numbers of shoppers have started to use the internet, they started making more purchases online; i.e., online shoe stores. There’s no more going to your local shoe store; people started buying shoes online. As internet retail stores started to see an increase in business, local vendors experienced a sharp decline. What is convenient for customers, it has begun to take a toll on once-prosperous local shops.

In today’s economy, small merchants face an even bigger challenge in order to stay in business. Also pressured by the declining economy, banks have tightened the reins by decreasing the lines of credit that merchants depend upon. This credit crunch has caused local merchants to resort to drastic measures. For instance; your local comfortable men’s shoes store owner may have to dip into his retirement fund to purchase inventory or fund the marketing campaign. The merchant simply doesn’t have a large funding base to draw on. And, with banks lowering credit limits, they has even fewer funds to work with. And with the decline in business they are looking at the strong possibility of having to restructure their lives.

Ice Machines: Finding the Right One for Your Restaurant

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

Ice machines are a necessity when running a restaurant. No matter how great the food is, if a cold beverage with ice is not available then the business can't thrive. Purchasing an ice machine for the restaurant is a big and important investment. To insure that the best machine is purchased there are some questions one should ask.

How Much Ice Will I Need?

This is an age old question that all food businesses eventually have to try to answer. The answer varies and requires that some research be done. The amount used will vary according to the time of day, the type of restaurant, whether or not there will be a bar in the restaurant, and the expected or projected amount of business.

There are some so-called guidelines that have been developed based on years of restaurant data. These can be used to formulate the ice needs for the restaurant before purchasing the ice machine:

  • Restaurant ice – 1.5 pounds per anticipated guest
  • Bar – 3 pounds per anticipated guest
  • Salad Bar – 30 pounds per cubic foot

Using these guidelines and the projected business from the restaurant’s business plan, the amount of ice needed can be approximated. After this number has been determined, before making a final decision on quantity, decide where the ice machine will be placed. If it is in an area that is hot, such as near the kitchen, the amount of ice may be drastically reduced and thus an even larger machine may be needed.

Water Cooled or Air Cooled

There are advantages and disadvantages to each system. Air cooled units are typically less expensive and easier to install than water cooled systems, however, they  are also noisy and produce a lot of excess heat. On the other hand, a water cooled system is much quieter and more efficient than an air cooled system. Water cooled system’s are not as simple to install but are still easy to install however, they do tend to be more costly.

To Filter or Not to Filter

Depending on the water quality in the area there may be a need for a water filter on the ice machine, unless the water coming from the main source has a filter. Water filters help to remove any excess sediments or chemical components from the water. This will also remove any odor from the water that could transfer over to the ice. If a filter is on the ice machine, changing it needs to be part of regularly scheduled maintenance.

Ice machines are a necessary part of any restaurant and should be considered an investment that will last for years.  A sturdy, well-built ice machine can easily last ten years with proper maintenance and care. Choose carefully and the payoff will be crystal clear ice for years to come.

Small Business Internet Marketing Strategies For A Home Business

Tuesday, July 7th, 2009

The applications of small business Internet marketing don’t necessarily require large money investments. The truth is that the Internet may be dominated by a few corporate giants, but the Internet is definitely shared by thousands of small businesses that successfully make their living out of online activities. With the necessity to attract more and more local companies in the online circuit, lots of efforts have been made in the direction of developing applied strategies of small business Internet marketing. How is it different from the common Internet marketing approach? Here it goes!

Small business Internet marketing is more focused on the objectives that contribute to the growth of less ample companies. The online advertising of small home businesses is not without importance. The world wide web opened the door to more customers, promoting small businesses even within the community where they develop activities. Besides contact details, a company could present more about its products, promote the services it provides, launch advertising campaigns and thus target customers more successfully than ever before. This is in fact the essence of small business Internet marketing.

The marketing strategies required by a small business differ from case to case because of the very diverse nature of the activities. Regional and local specifics also have to be taken into consideration when designing the marketing plan meant to attract new business customers. Therefore, the companies that specialize in small business Internet marketing should develop a close working relationship with the business owner in order to cover all the specific of the business. This is no longer just about search engine optimization and the choice of the right keywords, techniques have to be put to work in order to attract the geographically favorable clients.

There are also small businesses that promote services without being limited to a certain region, but most of the time such companies are usually conducted exclusively online. Good examples here are those of web sites that sell third-party products, marketing business web jobs and affiliate programs. Under such circumstances, besides the regular strategies, specialized tools such as software will be of paramount importance. Moreover, a good knowledge of the Internet transactions and their underlying mechanisms will also work in your favor, and this is not something you’ll get from a small business Internet marketing agency. May all your efforts be rewarded!

Make Money From Home

Thursday, June 25th, 2009

Are you thinking of ways to augment your cash til payday? Another job is likely? Start you own business? Second jobs are harder to find during these financially difficult times for everyone–from employees to employers. On the other hand, if you would rather stay at home to be with the family or you don’t want to be stressed with traffic or deal with obnoxious bosses to add to the workload, then making money from home could be the best set up for you.

Financial experts advise would-be entrepreneurs to start their own home businesses, particularly during tough economic times. From the point of view of these financial experts, starting and doing business from the comfort of your home presents many good reasons. One of the better reasons is the small cost needed to be put up by the first time entrepreneur. Starting a business from the home involves a much smaller startup capital as compared to investing in a big business. For one, you don’t have to pay a small fortune to maintain a fancy office, with an army of staff and a dozen utilities to keep it running. You can keep costs low by taking stock of what you have for now and start from there. When you need an extra hand with some of the business tasks, family members and friends can help you out at less or no cost, as compared to regular employees. Best of all, you don’t have to pay them extra for overtime fees or even holiday compensation, unless that can be arranged.

It’s no surprise then, that many people are considering home-based businesses as a great way to supplement their income from their day jobs. In fact, having a day job has its own benefits. When you are regularly employed, it is easier to get fast cash loans that you can use in your home-based business. Usually, these cash loans can be made in the form of cash loans online. These are short term loans that you can repay when your next paycheck comes in. When you go online, there are many websites that offer these online loans so it’s best that you check these out and choose the best one that suits your needs.

Tips For Forming a Growing and Profitable Small Business

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

There is nothing in the world more nerve-racking than starting a small business. Nothing, and that is the whole story. Although profitable small businesses do exist, and some inventive, lucky, and ambitious entrepreneurs do end up making a lot of money in the long run, it usually does take a very long time.

Unless you have the right connections and a good deal of money to invest, profitable franchises and other businesses are few and far between. You should not allow this to discourage you from starting your own profitable small business because it can be done.

Another saying comes to mind when I think about profitable small business. People often say “if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is”. This is especially true with profitable small businesses. There are all kinds of start your own business schemes that take advantage of people’s natural desire to make as much money as possible with as little effort. Basically, the more you have been shoved down in the dirt, the greater your dreams are likely to be.

People will actually fall for scams advertising profitable small businesses that are supposed to make you thousands of dollars a day while you sit at home in your pajamas! I am not saying that you shouldn’t check these small business opportunities out. Who knows – you might find the one in a million which is actually legitimate. All I am saying is that there is no point in your life when you need to use your common sense more than when your financial future is at stake. Taking stupid risks does not make you brave. It just makes you stupid.

The best way to start a profitable small businesses is with good advice and good sense. Being part of a small business network, of course, is always helpful. You would not believe how many small-business entrepreneurs are willing to share advice, and even resources with people who are trying to start a small business.

Profitable small businesses are often willing to work with others for mutual benefits which makes a small business network so useful for anyone who wants to succeed in the world of business.

Besides that, you need to make sure that you have a backup plan. If you can avoid it, don’t invest your own money too heavily. Getting investors is worth the effort.
